actually, google is using the service quite extensively in their marketing/advertising business. They create new phone numbers for advertisers to use in their ads (online and offline) and provides call tracking details for ROI of the advertising campaign. It really is a great idea for advertising metrics. They can even record the conversations for you and provide transcripts of each call.

My iPhone is arriving in the morning, and I'll give this try. But I'm rarely far from a PC when I'm near a landline, so this may not add much usefulness for me.

Well now there is an App for the Iphone called GrandDialer which allows you to use the technique described above for any number, in the US, and you can control where it calls you at as well. So you can use your Iphone as a dialer and receive the call on your land line. Only used it for a few days but thus far no problems to report.

Well, it didn't seem to run when I pointed or clicked on phone numbers, and after I installed it, my blog's formatting was messed up. Uninstalling it fixed it.

When I got your comment, I tried installing it again, and now it's working fine. I just placed a call using it - very easy and convenient - and my blog looks fine. Maybe it was an interaction with some other extension; lots of them have updated in the last week.

I did have one issue - my Google Mail pages seemed to have trouble loading at first. But when I reloaded them, they were fine. So your extension is staying on my PC and it's going to get a lot of use. Thanks for writing it for all of us!

Charles,

I'm curious what the issue was you were having with the addon and if there is any way I can help so you can use it.
