At least, so far for me. I’ve been using ThinkPads for years, and liking each
model more than the last, but now I’m getting frustrated. My fairly new T30
is crashing several times a week (sometimes several times a day), and in many
different ways: blue screen, screen freezing, black screen, random reboots.
I don’t know exactly what’s to blame, but I have my suspicions:
- Windows XP Pro. This is the first machine I’ve used it on, and now I’m
getting crashes. On the other hand, I’ve never heard anyone else saying that
XP crashes more than Windows 2000.
- Some old application. I installed Norton AV for Windows 2000, and an older
version of ZoneAlarm Pro. Both have been updated now, but maybe they left behind
some incompatible drivers.
- Orinoco Wi-Fi drivers. They seem fine, but they operate a low level and
could cause problems if they had bugs.
- That awful UltraNav pointing device! I loved the old TrackPoint, but this
new combination TrackPoint and touchpad really bugs me. I suspect it just
because I don’t like it. However, I just updated the driver to a brand new
release, and it still crashed last night.
So I’m going to format a new drive and install everything from scratch.
That’s what I did originally, and I’m very careful, and I still had problems.
But maybe this time things will go better (and I won’t install older versions
of AV and firewall programs).
