Keynote: Beyond .NET: The Mono Project

Filed under: OSCON 2003 — Charles Engelke @ 11:55 am

Miguel de Icaza will talk about the open source framework he’s working on
that’s similar to(?)/compatible with(?) Microsoft’s .NET. I know it started
as an effort to be a plug-in replacement for most of .NET, but I think it
may have been scaled back.

Well, it’s pretty ambitious, and doing very well. They have their C#
compiler and common language runtime finished, and have layered much of the
other .NET services on top of it. .NET is full of good ideas, but I feel
that’s it too closed and proprietary. If Mono succeeds, it could really
help .NET.
